Entertainment Centers

Some of the most enjoyable pieces I've designed and built have been custom entertainment centers. Whether built-in, or free-standing, the word "custom" really applies to this type of furniture, as each client has individual preferences for the electronic sound and media components they choose. I feel that the proportions designed into each piece are of great importance and can be very challenging when the choice is to house a very large L.C.D., Plasma, or projection screen T.V. As important is a design that is user-friendly: Careful attention is given to wire management so wires do not show. If needed, cooling fans are installed to protect the investment of your electronic equipment. Interior lighting is installed so you can see what you are doing! Access to the backs of all electronic components is provided so that making connections is an easy task. Finally, drawers and shelves can be designed into each piece to store CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, remote control units, etc. Many clients repeatedly say that their entertainment centers have transformed the look of their rooms and organized what has been a tangle of components and wires into a beautiful piece of furniture. Overall, durability, functionality and aesthetic quality are the hallmarks of my entertainment center designs. Take a look at a few of them here!

Drawers are mounted on full extension slides and have removable partitions. They store Cds, Dvds, and VHS tapes. All with easily read titles facing up.    Close-up of solid raised panel door inset. Lower cabinet top edge detail. Fluted stile and base moulding.

I wanted a more elegant base and it brought the tv closer to the front of the cabinet.    Freestanding Entertainment center. Made of West African Saplele, Honduras Mahogany, and Ebony.

All components and drawers are behind two tall pocket doors that are mounted and slide on a rack and pinion system.    If this cabinet finds a new home it can be moved quite easily, given that the drawers, interior parts, shelves, doors, back, and crown moulding assembly can all be removed.

In low light, this picture shows a slide-out light bar above an open drawer. With the push of one finger this light bar springs forward throwing light straight down so titles of CDs and DVDs can be easily read.

Entertainment Center made of Cherry.

Using no nails or screws, the base moulding on this piece is being clamped and glued in place.

Close up of where the two pieces and base moulding come together.

All of the doors and drawers are fit into place and the piece is almost ready for finishing.

Supports are in place, in order to hold a flat-screen TV.

Vent slots on top of cabinet in order to release heat from stereo- components.

These are my working templates made on the job-site to scale, with instructions for building this piece of furniture.

After many hours working in my shop, this piece has been beautifully installed. The finish on this piece consists of hand rubbed oil.

Power & cable are brought into the cabinet without a gaping hole.

Internal- power strip to accept all power cords from components.

What makes this particular piece so interesting is the opening in the wall to allow the large top to flow through to the opposite side.

The open space in the corner worked out to be perfect for placement of the Subwoofer. Components are behind a glass door in order for remotes to be able to send their signals.

This is an interesting nuance of where the lower top cuts into the cabinet to the right side.
